Speaking Up for Skilled Trades — and Why I’ll Never Stop Giving Back

By Adam Oldfield | Hamilton Entrepreneur | President of Vacu-Man & Rotary Club of Hamilton

On Wednesday, June 4, I’m honoured to be a Spotlight Speaker at the Skilled Trades Career Talk hosted by HIEC, where I’ll be talking to high school students across the region about the real-world value of skilled trades.

Now, I wear a few hats — President of Vacu-Man Furnace and Duct Cleaning, college professor, volunteer, and also the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Hamilton. But at the core of everything I do is a simple belief: we build stronger communities when we invest in the people who build them — literally.

Growing up in a Hamilton family business, I learned early that the trades weren’t just a job. They were — and still are — a career, a calling, and a vital part of our economy. I’ve worked in radio, marketing, and entrepreneurship, but it’s the skilled trades that have consistently grounded me in what’s real and what matters.

That’s why I jumped at the chance to speak at this event.

I’ll be sharing my own path: how I went from duct cleaning as a teen to running a multi-truck operation serving Hamilton and beyond, all while mentoring others and encouraging youth to look beyond the traditional university route. There’s pride in working with your hands. There’s opportunity in becoming a tradesperson. And there’s urgency in making sure young people know that.

I also believe in giving back — not just through business, but through community leadership. Whether it’s with Rotary or speaking at events like this, mentorship and service are how we keep momentum going in our city. It’s not just about cleaning air ducts — it’s about clearing the path for others.

If you’re a student wondering what’s next, or a parent thinking about options for your kids, this conversation matters. We need more people in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and beyond. And we need to support them from the start — with real stories, real opportunities, and yes, the occasional nudge from a guy like me.

I’ll be there June 4. I hope the next generation of tradespeople will be too.
