Crossing Borders, Sharing Purpose: My Visit with Rotary Buffalo

There’s something remarkable about walking into a room full of people you’ve never met—only to feel like you’ve known them for years. That’s exactly the feeling I had during my recent visit with our neighbours at the Rotary Club of Buffalo, one of the oldest and most respected clubs in Rotary’s long-standing history.

As President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, I was invited to join their Thursday noon meeting and was welcomed like a long-lost cousin who brought both manners and maple syrup. The Buffalo club was actually chartered just before ours in Hamilton, making this visit a symbolic and meaningful connection between two clubs with over a century of community service under their belts.

Yes, in 2025, we still hear the occasional grumble about tariffs, border delays, and whether it’s safe to “pop over” to the U.S. (spoiler alert: it is). But let me tell you—Rotary proves there are no borders when it comes to Service Above Self. During my visit, we exchanged not only banners but ideas, laughs, and a shared commitment to building better communities on both sides of the border.

As I prepare to take on the role of president, I see even more opportunity to foster cross-border collaboration between Rotary Hamilton clubs and our American friends. Whether it’s through joint service projects, shared fundraising efforts, or just showing up and supporting each other, Rotary reminds us that community doesn’t stop at the 49th parallel.

I encourage fellow Rotarians—and those considering the Rotary journey—to explore the work of both Rotary Hamilton and Rotary Buffalo. These clubs may fly different flags, but the mission is universal.

And when I’m not waving the Rotary banner (or explaining to Americans what a butter tart is), I’m running Vacu-Man Furnace and Duct Cleaning, a family business that’s been cleaning air ducts and furnaces for over 45 years—because whether we’re serving homes or humanity, clean air and clear values go hand in hand.
